Rudolf receiving the Founder's Award from the ESA

It's hard to believe that 52 year-old German hybridizer Rudolf Hessing has been breeding epiphyllum flowers for over 30 years. At the upcoming Epiphyllum Society of America meeting on Tuesday evening, April 4, we will be hosting the world premiere of a slideshow featuring his latest hybrids as well as some of his "old standards."

Initially Rudolf was interested in large-flowered plants (like many of us!). He soon realized however, that he did not have space for many of these plants, and subsequently he turned his attention to growing smaller, more compact plants. His hybridization program focuses on multicolored, frequently-flowering compact plants.

Not content with only enjoying his epies in the spring, Rudolf has accomplished something no other breeder had done before him, and that is to hybridize plants that bloom at different times throughout the year, to the point that he now has something blooming every month!

Rudolf has been a speaker at EpiCon in both 2012 and 2014. In 2014, he also was awarded the ESA's Founders' Award, joining previous honorees: George French, Wressey Cocke, Helmut Paetzold, Evelyn Shiraki, and Darryl Miyamoto. Invite your friends and family to see over 120 photographs of his incredible body of work. This is a program that is not to be missed.
